Home is where Evelyn is

Evelyn is a widower who no longer wants to be bystander in life. Though she loved her husband, George, dearly, was she ever her own woman? Wanting to live whatever life she has left in the beautiful setting of a book she read many years ago, she cashes in her savings, hands the keys to her home to her son Tim and heads off for her own adventure.

Evelyn is a wonderfully normal and warm character, who endears anyone who crosses her path including grumbly old Jane. These two unlikely ladies, both widows and mothers but with very different outlooks on life and histories begin to forge a friendship. As the story unfolds both Jane and Evelyn bring depth to each other's life that neither knew they needed.

Whilst Evelyn seems to spread cheer and optimism wherever she goes and manages to having meaningful relationships with all the village folk, I enjoy the 'ship between her and Zak and Evelyn's interest in the bus stop, it isn't without some challenges!

This is an easy read, mild scandal and a villain we all love to hate on the shape of Henrietta. Evelyn felt like an old friend that you really wanted to see happy and settled. This isn't my typical genre and is more slow paced than I enjoy but it was such a comfort read. Evelyn shows that there is life after middle age and that only fear can get in the way of a new life and new friendships. Be like Evelyn and break that mould 💚
